Punchline by SUGARfx is a collection of 32 dynamic and high-energy elements including titles, lower thirds and transitions all customizable and easy to tweak from within your FCPX inspector. You can find them all under the FCPX Themes window labeled “Punchline.” An online manual is also available for download if you need help, but the learning curve is quite minimal.
Traditionally, dropzones are used to insert images in any project. However, a variety of the included Grid FX utilizes a unique 1-2-3-4 marker system to select images to be used within a transition. In other words, four markers are laid out across you timeline. Simply move these markers anywhere across your working timeline to choose an image (actually 4) that will be used within your grid transition!
You can choose from a variety of color styles to suit your desired look including normal color, overlay, multiply, add or no color at all. Overlay is my personal favorite color mode, adding a colored tint to my grid images. Of course, the color of the overlay (or any other color mode) can be altered. Grid lines can be toggled on or off, and their color changed too.
Regarding the built in titles, all enclosed fonts and colors are easily altered via the FCPX Inspector window in a traditional way.
The only two things I see missing from this version-one release of Punchline is the ability to alter the width of the grid lines and being able to change the drop shadow color. Other than that, this FCPX plug-in will truly add “punch” to the look of your projects.
Editors will appreciate the polished use of text FX, color modes, traveling mattes, and dynamic animation that make Punchline so unique. Normally this sort of animation effect would take hours to create in Motion or After Effects; a real time saver. A fully functional watermarked trial version of Punchline is available through the latest FxFactory download on the Noise Industries website.
Special thanks to Noise Industries and the Zazil Media Group for allowing me the opportunity to spend time with their fine products and to share my take on them all this past week!
