This quick tutorial is for making an ALPHA MATTE from images or footage WITHOUT using ADD or SCREEN modes, so that you can composite and pre-compose

Technique:

1. Duplicate layer you want to composite
2. On the TOP layer, add the TINT EFFECT
3. Then add the LEVELS EFFECT
4. Tweak the levels, crushing the whites and/or blacks as needed
5. Use the mid tone slider to control feathering and tweaking the matte
6. Make the BOTTOM layer a LUMA MATTE

Additionally, you might want to parent the top layer to the bottom layer (or vice-versa)

That’s it!

Enjoy!
