There are different kinds of software to color-grade your footage, like Da Vinci, Final Cut and of course Premiere Pro, the one we use. With every software, it’s possible to use LUTs when color grading your footage. But what are they and how do they work? In this tutorial we will explain how you can give you footage the wanted look with a LUT.

Before you can use a LUT, you have to have footage. Preferably you want to film your shots as flat as possible, with a Log video. The Panasonic GH5 that we are using uses a V-log. Shooting in Log is primarily designed to maximize the dynamic range. This comes in handy when your shot has very bright and dark parts, this way you can prevent the under or over exposure of your image. But when shooting in a controlled environment like a studio, you don’t always have to use a Log, a neutral setting can be flat enough for shooting in the studio. We just find it easier to match all our clips to each other when filmed in Log.

Here’s a quick tutorial on how Casey takes a finished project from Premiere into Resolve for grading then back into Premiere for final graphics and render! We hope it gives you a good overview of how we do things! I know it’s really short and fast, but hopefully it’ll give you a good overview of how I do things.

Use Presets in Premiere Pro & After Effects to give your video editing and motion design projects unique color looks.

I use video editing presets often to quickly create stylized looks for color grading. They are a more affordable option than plugins for those on a budget.  There are several FREE preset collections available online that will work in Premiere Pro or After Effects (they work in one application or the other, not both). These Premiere Pro and After Effects presets are a combination of multiple effects that you can use as is or modify to create your own custom looks.

In this post I’ll share a few resources for free Premiere Pro presets and how to install them on your system.  Then we’ll tackle free AE presets, with installation instructions as well.

What is a Colorist - International Colorist Academy

Colorists are often the last thing people think about on many lower-budget projects, but besides a good sound editor, they are what bring your video to the next level. A good colorist is capable of (within reason) making your footage match perfectly from shot to shot, and they are often a great second set of eyes to give you a new perspective on what your project is about and how it can look its best.

The video above from the International Colorist Academy (which was started by Warren Eagles and Kevin Shaw) does a great job explaining what colorists actually do. Even if you choose to do your own color correction and grading, understanding the mindset that a colorist uses when approaching a project can help you produce better work with a more consistent vision throughout.
