It’s been five years since Apple last updated Final Cut Pro 7. Let’s take a look at how video production and other NLEs have changed since.
Five years ago, Apple released 7.0.3 — the final update to Final Cut Pro 7.
That year, the BP Oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and WikiLeaks dominated news headlines. Apple released the iPhone 4. Inception was the most talked about film, and independent videographers were all getting their hands on the Canon 7D.
Even with all the advancements in camera technology over the past five years, there are still plenty of users editing on Final Cut Pro 7. I’ll admit it… even I still use FCP7 on an occasional project. I had absolutely mastered Final Cut Pro over the years, but with the release of FCPX I was left with a void. Since then, I have dabbled in most of the other NLEs, but I could just never get myself to fully breakaway from FCP7.
Now that we are entering an era where most cell phones will shoot 4K footage, and 360 degree videos can be watched on YouTube and Facebook, it’s time to let FCP7 die. The software just can’t handle production needs anymore. Let’s take a look at some of the available options for video editors still caught in NLE limbo, here.

The channel will offer tutorials, testimonials and a curated playlist of user-created videos for owners and users of Sony 4K cameras.
“We created this channel to do one thing — create a community of owners and users of Sony 4K cameras,” said channel manager Brett Erlich. It will offer tutorials, testimonials and a curated playlist of user-created videos.
Here’s a preview video that gives a taste of what the channel is all about, hosted by channel manager Brett Erlich…
“We’re building this community with the development of this technology. As it grows, we’ll grow,” Erlich said, acknowledging that 4K is still in the early stages and the company doesn’t have current figures on how many consumers would be able to view the content in 4K, which is four times the picture information of HD (thus requiring more bandwidth than HD).
Most of the tutorials will be shot at the Sony Digital Motion Picture Center on the Sony lot (pictured above).
Asked about high dynamic range, a wider range between the whitest whites and blackest blacks — and a feature that many Hollywood vets believe to be a more noticeable picture improvement compared with 4K — Erlich responded: “We will be addressing high dynamic range in the future, but we’ll be addressing 4K first because of YouTube’s ability to support 4K.”

The rumor mill is abuzz with speculation, but we have the first full scoop on the GoPro HERO4.
As many have reported, the two big features that are appearing are 4K video recording at 30FPS and a built-in touch display.
Unfortunately, these two features won’t be appearing in the same camera. Instead, there will be two models: the HERO4 Black (shown above) and the HERO4 Silver (shown below).
The HERO4 Black is a powerhouse action camera that doubles the performance of the previous GoPro (yet again). Touted as “the most advanced GoPro ever,” it has improved image quality and a 2x more powerful processor…
