Traditional movie posters are giving way to motion posters. Learn how you can generate interest in your own project with a motion poster.

With the growth of social media platforms, we’ve seen the rise of several trends from studios and creators that push traditional marketing strategies. One of the new innovative trends from the last decade is the use of a motion poster — or moster for short.

GeekNation.com first developed the concept, and it would appear that the first commissioned motion poster was for the 2005 psychological crime thriller Hard Candy. Here is the standard poster:

And this is the motion poster (in the video version, you can hear the sound of the grating metal from the trap):

It’s certainly a lot more engaging. You end up looking at the poster for those extra few seconds, possibly walking away with a more defined idea of what the film is about. This can ultimately lead to a ticket sale.

I have always wanted to do a dolly zoom, but it always seemed out of my reach. I needed to learn the technique, get the right equipment, and figure out how to really nail it. So now I’m like a kid in a candy store since I learned that I can finally do one using post trickery! And it looks, to my eye, just as good!  The Dolly Zoom is a classic Hollywood shot technique that has been employed in countless films since the late 50s. Usually, one would need a zoom lens to achieve this effect. However, by following this tutorial you will be able to replicate the effect with just a prime lens and slider.  Take a look at this tutorial by Lewis McGregor who shows you how to create a dolly zoom effect in Adobe After Effects, no zoom lens required!

Even if you’ve never heard of a dolly zoom before, chances are you’ve seen them: Hitchcock’s extending staircase shot in “Vertigo”…

…or Brody’s moment of realization in Spielberg’s “Jaws” are two of the most recognizable examples of the technique.

It’s a pretty slick camera move you can pull off by moving your camera forward on a dolly while simultaneously zooming out with your lens, or vice versa. [Read More]

Creating GIFs in Premiere Pro

Everyone loves GIFs. They’re everywhere — and there are plenty of resources online for transforming video and photo sequences into the GIF format.

But what about doing it straight from Adobe Premiere Pro? Here’s how to make it happen.

GIFs have become a part of everyday internet life. They’re used to tell jokes and replay sports footage. With Facebook’s new GIF messaging feature, you can take a reply one step further than an emoji with a GIF response.

Most importantly, GIFs have become an integral marketing tool for brands — especially films and studios. Why post a still image when you can post a three-second sequence? Take the GIF below from the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Facebook page. The post has a conversion link for people to buy tickets to see the film. While a still image would have done the same job, a GIF certainly keeps eyes on the post a lot longer.
