Chantel’s Cakes & Pastries

This is the introduction to a new network promo show called “Chantel’s” with Dennis Stanley, professional baker.

Approximately 15 million Americans — including 3 million children — suffer from food allergies, and the prevalence is increasing. Because there is no cure, avoidance of the allergen is the only way to prevent reactions. Each year in the U.S., it is estimated that anaphylaxis caused by food results in 150 to 200 deaths. Death can be sudden, sometimes occurring within minutes.

Chantel’s Cakes & Pastries of Sterling, VA has been creating items for those affected (and not affected) by food allergies for over 20 years. Clients have included Oprah Winfrey, President George W. Bush, and President Barack Obama’s daughter, Sasha.

The Final Flight of NASA’s DISCOVERY…

April 17, 2012

Video by Jeff Riegel

To the thrill of large crowds below, Discovery made several passes over the Washington, DC area between 10:00 and 11:00 am on April 17 before landing safely at Washington-Dulles International Airport.

Approximately 10:40am: This was the second (of three) fly-overs over Dulles Airport on April 17, 2012.  We listened to the Control Tower as they talked the 747 down.  Upon final approach, the follow-plane was said to be low on fuel and happy to be landing, since a second fly-over at approximately 2500-3000 feet was not previously planned.  The shuttle and 747 landed on it’s final third approach.  I could smell the rubber from the braking tires of the 747 within 90 seconds after landing from my vantage point across Rt 28 in Herndon, VA

James S. McDonnell Space Hangar at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum
March 22, 2011

This morning was a very interesting morning, indeed.
For the last 9 months I’ve lived within spitting distance of the James S. McDonnell Space Hangar at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly VA, a branch of the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum in downtown Washington DC.

Two hours before the museum was to open to the public, I met with Frank McNally, Public Affairs Specialist, museum photographer, Dane Penland, and Guy Noffsinger, a video producer for NASA. Guy is putting together a detailed documentary on The History of The Space Shuttle and was interested in getting a number of video clips of the spacecraft that lead up to the creation of the shuttle program, not to mention some (additional) video b-roll of the Enterprise which is currently on display at the museum. Guy is a huge Star Trek fan, so anything “Enterprise-related” gets his attention; he has even arranged for William (“Bill”) Shatner to narrate a short version of his documentary (See: )

I volunteered to assist Guy on his morning shoot, getting a few shots with his Canon 5D Mark II. Afterwards, the PAO give us a quick driving tour of the museum as well as a new (soon-to-be-dedicated) hanger in the rear of the building for rebuilding vintage aircraft.

Loudoun Hounds Baseball Fan Fest (HD)

We’re still all agog and atwitter about what took place on February 13, 2011. More than 9,500 fans packed the halls of Stone Bridge High School in Ashburn, VA for the inaugural FanFest hosted by the Loudoun Hounds professional baseball club, the team’s president said in a statement.

The event included a lineup of former Major League Baseball players, including 1960 World Series Most Valuable Player Bobby Richardson, former Washington Senator Frank “Hondo” Howard and four-time All-Star Boog Powell, as well as more than a dozen other players who shared stories and signed autographs for fans.

“We knew this event was going to be big, but this exceeded our expectations,” said Bob Farren, president and chief executive of the Hounds. “The response from the community was amazing.”

Farren said that fans from as far as Lancaster, Pa., and Virginia Beach attended.

They arrived at Hounds FanFest smiling and left it laughing, warmed against the afternoon’s chill by the hot-stove baseball talk and the knowledge that the Loudoun Hounds aren’t just coming, but are most decidedly already here.
